Stand on the Side of Love:
Support Freedom to Marry
UCH and UUPLAN are joining the Standing on the Side of Love campaign in force during the month of February, when we will support the legalization of same-sex marriages in Pennsylvania. Join us and take a stand! Here’s how you can help:
-
1. Sign a valentine at coffee hour addressed to your senator and representative January 17th, 24th or 31st.
-
2. Come to the State Capitol on Feb. 8 for Freedom to Marry Day! Meet your state legislators, help deliver valentines from UU’s all over state, attend a press conference, and join in a march and rally following the press conference. Read about all the week’s activities at www.FreedomToMarryPA.org.
-
3. Can’t make it to church this month? You have a choice of a color valentine or a black-and-white valentine that incorporates the Standing on the Side of Love logo. If you don’t have color printing available to you, you can print the black and white version on various rainbow colors of paper. If you have cardstock available, that would be a plus. And then send it to Alanna Berger (address in the directory) or to the UCH office (1280 Clover Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17113).
And make sure you come to church February 14th at Market Street. We are planning a delightfully romantic service, with a blessing for all couples and a celebratory reception to follow.

Our Purpose
The purpose of the Rainbow EqUUality Advocates (formerly Freedom to Marry) Lay Led Ministry was originally to educate ourselves, our congregation, and our community about all aspects of the right to marry, and explore ways to let it be known that this ministry supports the right of same sex couples to marry. However, in Pennsylvania, gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender individuals currently lack equal rights in employment, lending, housing and public accommodations; in addition, only those lucky enough to have enlightened employers have access to health care benefits for domestic partners. Although we will continue to advocate for marriage equality, we must focus our efforts on equal rights in these crucial areas first.

**
The decision to form such a Lay Led Ministry at UCH was inspired in part by the historical support of the UUA for Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, and Transgendered persons (http://www.uua.org/news/2004/freedomtomarry/), the fact that the UCH is a Welcoming Congregation (http://www.uua.org/obgltc/wcp/wc1expln.html) and finally, President Sinkford's Freedom to Marry initiatives (http://www.uua.org/giving/ftmfund.html)
