Exploring Unitarian Universalist Sources

    World Religions

  • Alternating yearly with Judeo-Christian Heritage, participants experience a sampling of the rich tapestry of world religions. Religions and cultures have "jewels of wisdom" from which a great deal can be learned. Many sources provide inspiration, including Chinese philosophy, Hindu scripture, contemporary songs, music, nature, poetry, art, the Bible, etc.

    Emphasis at various levels includes:

  • Elementary: diversity, religion of the prophets, and holidays and holy days
  • Middle School: customs, rituals, and beliefs of other faiths
  • High School: in-depth look at various religions of choice

    Judeo-Christian Heritage & the Bible

  • Jewish and Christian teachings and Bible literacy are emphasized and valued due to the prominence of the Bible in our society and culture. The lens of Unitarian Universalists' ideas and values are used to discuss literal history versus myth, the limited concept of God, male chauvinism and ideas such as violence and vengeance. The timeless lessons that Bible stories offer include: rules for living, evil, sacrifice, wisdom, human nature, power in the world, and feelings and attitudes such as jealousy, struggle, love, courage, repentance, faith, and loyalty. Time is also spent focusing on the teachings of Jesus and Christian and Jewish Holy Days. While accepting and respectful of Christian ideas of Jesus, children are told that most UUs believe that Jesus was a wise and courageous man whose lessons still have meaning today.
